Fascinating Rhythm’s story began in 1995, when two members of Avonbelles, Ali Jack and Donna Rees, decided it was time to create something new. Together with Dot Hewitt and Di Crossfield, they formed a new singing group called Rainbow.
Rainbow Chorus
Rainbow quickly made its mark, performing with energy, character and a great sense of fun. When Di Crossfield stepped down as Musical Director, Wendy Elliott took over, and in 1999 the chorus adopted a new name: Fascinating Rhythm.
Stephen Derrick was invited to coach the chorus and then took on the role of Musical Director. He was succeeded by Pete Nugent, who introduced Fascinating Rhythm to its first Love to Sing course. The response was extraordinary, attracting almost 200 women. Many went on to join the chorus, and several are still singing with us today.
Pete was followed by Jo Thorn, who led the chorus for 16 years. Under her inspiring leadership, Fascinating Rhythm grew in both size and musical excellence, becoming one of the top five choruses in LABBS for a period. Jo encouraged members to achieve more than they thought possible, combining high musical standards with warmth, humour and a strong sense of friendship.

Since early 2025, the chorus has been led by Wendy Howse, who is building on these strong foundations and looking towards an exciting future.
Today, founder Ali Jack remains an integral part of Fascinating Rhythm as Chorus Manager and pitch pipe blower. More than 30 years on, Fascinating Rhythm continues to welcome women of all ages, united by friendship, a love of singing and the joy of a cappella harmony.
